A Germany-based Ghanaian, Maame Adwoa, has shared the struggles she faced as an undocumented immigrant in Germany.

In an interview with Zionfelix TV on October 30, 2024, she revealed the hardships she endured while trying to survive without legal status in a foreign country.

Maame Adwoa recounted how she could only afford to bathe once a week during her pregnancy due to financial constraints and the high cost of utilities.

“While I was pregnant, I went through a lot. I didn’t have a stable place to stay, so a friend took me in. Because water and electricity are expensive, I could only bathe once a week to avoid burdening him with increased bills,” she explained.

Despite her host’s kindness, she often lied about bathing to avoid the risk of being asked to leave.

“He sometimes asked if I had bathed, and I would say yes, though I was lying because I didn’t want him to throw me out.”

Maame Adwoa further disclosed that she couldn’t afford new clothes as she used her savings in attempt to secure documentation.

“All the money I earned from small jobs went into getting papers, so I couldn’t buy new clothes and had to rely on what I brought from Ghana. Even panties were a problem; I didn’t have any.”

She also shared a distressing encounter with the police when she was nine months pregnant.

She had planned to go to the hospital during labour, hoping this might lead to legal documentation.

“When I went to the hospital, the doctors told me I wasn’t due to give birth yet, so I had to return home. On my way back, I was arrested by the German police,” she recalled.

Maame Adwoa’s story sheds light on the difficult realities faced by undocumented immigrants in pursuit of better opportunities.
