Veteran Ghanaian footballer Opoku Sampene has made a stunning revelation about his past earnings and financial decisions.

The former Bofoakwa Tano player joined Asante Kotoko in 1986 when his career was at its peak, earning him a hefty transfer bonus.

According to Sampene, poor financial planning led to financial struggles later in life, and he now regrets the choices he made.

Speaking in an interview with Dan Kwaku Yeboah, he recalled how he squandered his signing on fee of GH¢500,000 on a car instead of making long-term investments.

“When I joined Kotoko, they gave me GH¢500,000. I could have bought five houses in Sunyani, but instead, I spent it on cars just to drive around,” he admitted.

He also reflected on how his misjudgment and extravagant lifestyle contributed to his financial difficulties.

Sampene recounted how his love for partying sometimes got him into trouble, including a humorous incident involving a song he played while hosting a man he had approached to help facilitate his move to Asante Kotoko.

“I remember playing a song when Arko—the man I had asked to help bring me to Kotoko visited me. When he heard it, he asked if I was really serious about my career. Miscalculations on my part made a big difference, especially for me,” he added.
