Ghana and Nigeria have long shared a “sibling rivalry,” exchanging playful jabs whenever one pulls ahead in music, film, food, or sports.
That rivalry took center stage on January 14, 2026, after the Super Eagles lost their AFCON semi-final to Morocco on penalties, and the entertainment scene from both countries jumped right in.
Nigerian football fans, along with several entertainers, accused Ghanaian referee Daniel Laryea of biased officiating during the match.
The backlash spilled onto social media, prompting exchanges between Nigerian entertainment personalities and their Ghanaian counterparts.
Nigerian Rapper Odumodublvck vowed never to collaborate with a Ghanaian artiste again following the defeat, taking aim at Black Sherif, whom he has previously worked with, and also at Shatta Wale.

“If we lose this match I will never make music with a Ghanaian artiste in my life,” Odumodublvck wrote.
Nigerian singer Teni also joined the fray, jokingly blaming Ghana Dancehall rivals Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy for the Super Eagles’ loss.
“Ghanaians, have you seen what you have caused? Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy, you guys have made Nigeria lose the game. Ghanaians you will pay for this. How can you betray Nigerians this way? Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy we will fight,” Teni said.
Nigerian video director TG Omori escalated the jokes further, calling on President Tinubu to “send the jets to Ghana.”
Ghanaian comedian SDK responded that Nigeria needed the jets more than Ghana. “Bro you guys need it more than us,” SDK replied.
While Nigerian entertainers accused Daniel Laryea of poor officiating, Ghanaian media personality Nana Aba Anamoah defended him.
“The Ghanaian referee did a great job,” she wrote.
Ghanaian YouTuber Wode Maya humorously suggested that the referee took the match personally. “The Ghanaian refreeeeeee really take the match personal,” he posted on X.
Nigeria lost 4-2 on penalties after Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi had their attempts saved by Yassine Bounou, following a goalless draw after extra time at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.
Due to the long-standing “friendly rivalry” between the Ghana and Nigeria, some fans speculated, jokingly or otherwise, that the referee may have had an extra incentive.
