Legendary Highlife maestro Kojo Antwi, also known as “Mr Music Man,” has disclosed a shocking chapter from the early days of his career that almost derailed his rise to fame.
Speaking in an interview on February 5, 2026, on Joy FM, the Highlife legend recounted a story he has kept for nearly 50 years, where a secret romance with a police officer’s daughter led to a tense encounter with the law.
According to Kojo Antwi, the incident occurred during his early days as a “band boy,” long before he became a household name.
He recounted that while performing at Walako, a popular venue near Kaneshie, his girlfriend, who was supposed to be in school, showed up unexpectedly. Concerned for her safety and education, Kojo reportedly called for a break in the performance to escort her home, and while they were waiting for a car, a police patrol team stopped and began questioning them.

“I decided to send her home. So I took her to try to grab a taxi for her to go home. We were there, and the police patrol team just bumped into us, and they started asking us questions. One question. They wouldn’t even wait for answers,” Kojo Antwi recounted.
The Highlife legend noted that the situation escalated when the patrol officers took them to the girl’s mother, only to learn that her father, a senior officer at Nima Police Station, had already been searching for them.
“I hadn’t had time to talk to her about her dad. She had never mentioned the daddy. I didn’t know he was a police officer at Nima Police Station. That’s a part that, I mean, most people didn’t know about,” he said.
Mr Music Man looked back on the stigma musicians faced at the time, saying it was not a profession a police officer would want his daughter associated with.
“Back then, it wasn’t something that came with prestige, nothing. It’s not something that a policeman would want the daughter to be attached to,” he added.
