Ghanaian-born American comedian Michael Blackson’s revelation about losing part of his $1.2 million Eurobond investment due to Ghana’s debt restructuring program has sparked widespread outrage on social media.

In a recent interview on Vlad TV, Michael Blackson explained that his investment, intended to fund a free school he established in Agona Nsabaa, was affected by the government’s 2024 Eurobond debt exchange program.

He apologised for initially blaming Ghana and rather directed the blames at the NPP administration for his loss.

Following this heart-wrenching revelation, scores of Ghanaians have expressed anger and disappointment on social media, directing their frustrations at the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) government led by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

They have expressed sympathy for the actor and accused the NPP of corruption and mismanagement.

One user lamented, “DDEP was and remains the biggest evil a country has ever done to its citizens. My money remains at Databank!” Another added, “The crazy thing is how not one single debt was actually paid, so the money was really lost.”

“Any follower and avid supporter of the NPP has the potential to do worse than this in the future. Know them now and protect this country from such scavengers,” another comment read.

“Investing in education and giving back to the community is admirable, and it’s heartbreaking to see such efforts hindered by corruption. Hope he finds a way to recover from this setback,” a user wrote.

Some called for accountability, with one person asking, “Can he sue the former administration? If somebody was going to get him his money back, it means it’s possible for the government to do it, but they chose not to, turning it into an opportunity for corrupt officials to benefit. Evil regime.”

The Domestic Debt Exchange Program (DDEP) will remain a lasting stain on the NPP government for years. I’d be just as furious if it had affected me.

That said, I knew someone would twist the story as soon as I watched the interview yesterday.

At what point did he actually say… https://t.co/8XN3lK6Yu3

He spoke directly to Gabby and Ken Ofori Atta and still got scammed 😆😆😆

He didn’t know they were the kingpins?

Ghana will NOT pay that money in 15years, go and take your money from NPP https://t.co/991BY2VYWv

Seeing Ghana’s credit rating and still choosing to invest in a high-risk bond is one thing(you took a chance)—but complaining about your losses afterward only highlights a lack of financial literacy. https://t.co/06n5qK5Bri
