Ghana took centre stage in the global celebration marking the close of the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ 2025), underscoring its leadership in advancing inclusive and transformative quantum research.

Speaking at the closing ceremony on February 10, 2026, Michele Dougherty, President of the Institute of Physics in the United Kingdom, pointed out Ghana’s role in securing global recognition for quantum science.

Here is why Ghana must invest in quantum science

“In May 2024, Ghana formally submitted the resolution to the United Nations General Assembly and on June 7 of that year, the General Assembly officially declared 2025 the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology.

“It’s particularly important to acknowledge the vital role of our hosts here in Ghana. Ghana was not only one of the key champions of the UN proclamation, but it also embodies one of the central ambitions of the International Year,” she noted.

Michele Dougherty further indicated that quantum science is already making a tangible impact on global challenges and stressed the importance of inclusion in its future development.

“The global south is not merely a consumer of quantum technologies, but an active participant, innovator and developer. So, the proclamation called on us to ensure that quantum progress bridges the divide rather than creating new ones, and also to support a global quantum agenda grounded in inclusion, education and workforce development, as well as international cooperation,” she added.

The year 2025 was designated by the United Nations General Assembly as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology to highlight rapid advancements in the field and its growing significance in addressing global scientific, technological and developmental challenges.

Since its launch, IYQ 2025 has mobilised a broad and diverse global community through scientific events, educational initiatives, policy dialogues, public engagement activities, and capacity-building efforts across all regions.

Particular attention has been given to promoting inclusive participation, strengthening scientific capacity, and addressing emerging gaps in access to quantum science and technology.
