Executive Council Member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Frederick Acheampong, has dismissed criticisms aimed at Asante Kotoko following their exit from the 2025 CAF Confederation Cup.

Asante Kotoko suffered a heavy defeat to their Moroccan counterparts, Wydad Athletic Club (WAC), in Casablanca, losing 6-1 on aggregate.

The disappointing result sparked widespread criticisms from sections of the public who felt the scoreline tarnished the image of Ghanaian club football on the continental stage.

However, Acheampong, popularly known as Achie has pushed back against the backlash, arguing that WAC is superior to Kotoko in many aspects of club management.

He noted that the level of financial investment WAC receives from the Moroccan state cannot be compared to the Porcupine Warriors, who struggle to meet even basic operational needs.

“When clubs in Morocco participate in Africa, they are given $800,000 for the Champions League and $500,000 for the Confederation Cup to support them. So what more do they need in terms of recruitment and motivation? If Kotoko had $500,000, imagine what they could do with capacity and recruitment. Compare Kotoko’s players to Morocco’s and see if they match.

“There are surprises in football, but realistically, how do you expect Kotoko to beat WAC? Maybe only through spiritual incantations [juju]. Their technical team is nowhere close, they have a video analyst, dietician, instructor, and others. In which areas do you expect Kotoko to beat WAC? It’s a tall order,” Acheampong said in Twi during an interview on Kessben FM on October 29, 2025.
