Renowned Ghanaian gospel musician Abena Serwaa Ophelia has debunked misconceptions that she does not charge for her performances in churches.

Speaking in an interview with Kingdom FM, the ‘M’aseda Dwom’ singer clarified that she does charge for her shows, although she is willing to make exceptions for those close to her or in genuine need.

“It’s not true that I don’t charge for my shows. I do charge for shows I am booked to perform at.

“I can only reduce prices for people who are close to me because of our relationship. If they come and explain their budget or circumstances, I can reduce my fees.

“If I come to the church and see that you genuinely cannot afford my prices, I would reduce it,” she said.

According to her, it would be unreasonable to expect her and her crew to perform without compensation, even for church events.

“But I beg, I can’t come and perform for you for free. It would be unfair. How can you look at me and my crew and say because I am doing the work of God, I should perform for free?

“Even the pastor in question would not be able to look at your face and say ‘go home,’” she said.

Her comments come on the back of the debate over whether or not Gospel artists should charge for their ministrations.

While some artists, including McAbraham and Amy Newman, have spoken against it, others, including Ohemaa Mercy, Broda Sammy, and Diana Hamilton, prefer the opposite.
