Ghanaian media personality and former Board Chairman of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), Paul Adom-Otchere, has taken a swipe at the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, over comments made at a recent press conference concerning former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

Speaking on his Good Evening Ghana programme while reviewing the Attorney-General’s latest Government Accountability Series press briefing, Adom-Otchere questioned the relevance and intent of Dr Ayine’s repeated references to the “top lawyers” reportedly hired by Ofori-Atta in the United States.

Here’s how much Ken Ofori-Atta could be paying top US lawyers in extradition fight

At the press conference, the Attorney-General announced that extradition processes had begun to bring Ofori-Atta back to Ghana to face trial.

He explained that the former Finance Minister, who is currently outside the country, has engaged highly experienced lawyers in the United States and is expected to challenge the extradition through the American court system.

Dr Ayine noted that the case could move from the U.S. District Court to the Circuit Court and, potentially, to the US Supreme Court, a process that could significantly delay Ofori-Atta’s return to Ghana.

Reacting to these remarks, Adom-Otchere expressed confusion over why the country’s chief legal officer would repeatedly stress the calibre of lawyers on the opposing side.

He argued that Dr Ayine himself is widely regarded as a top-tier lawyer, having graduated from Stanford University and questioned what message was being sent to the public.

“Now, the Attorney General then also says, we are not too sure what we should make of that, that the former Finance Minister Ken Oferiata will be hiring very, very powerful lawyers, very powerful lawyers. I’m not sure what psychology that is building up.

“Why is our lawyer telling us that the opponent is that…the opponent could have top, top, lawyers? But we recognize Dominic Ayine who is a Stanford University graduate, as a very, very, top lawyer.

“Then we learned Dominic Ayine he’s a graduate of Stanford University, “he said.

He continued, “I think Stanford is Ivy League, isn’t it? Just Stanford University graduate. So, he’s a top lawyer. Then he, in whom we trust, is holding a press conference and then he’s telling us that, Ken Ofori Atta, he is going to hire top lawyers.

“What should we do with that? Attorney General, sorry to you. What should we do with that information?”
