Former Ghanaian footballer Philip Opoku Sampene was on the verge of a life-changing transfer to Queens Park Rangers, with his career reaching new heights. However, fate had other plans.

At the peak of his career, the former Asante Kotoko player had earned widespread recognition across Ghana, attracting interest from English club Queens Park Rangers.

A move to Loftus Road would have fulfilled his lifelong dream of playing in Europe.

However, a cruel accident shattered those aspirations, leading QPR to withdraw from the transfer.

In an emotional interview with Dan Kwaku Yeboah, Sampene recalled the heartbreaking moment he learned that his move to England had been called off.

The incident not only cut his career short but also derailed what could have been a defining moment in his life.

“The accident I had in Ghana ended my career. When the white man [QPR representative] heard I was injured, he cried bitterly. I wasn’t okay. I ruined a move that would have changed my life. They had already paid £15,000 to him,” he said.

Despite the collapsed transfer, QPR ensured Sampene received proper medical care. Reflecting on that time, the former Bofoakwa Tano player believes his recovery was nothing short of divine intervention.

“He took me to the hospital, and they treated me very well. I never fully regained my strength after the accident, but I believe God loves me because recovering enough to play again was miraculous,” he added.

Sampene later went on to play for clubs such as Africa Sports Abidjan in Ivory Coast and Churchill Brothers Salcette in India.
