A homeless man has been arrested after a woman’s body was discovered near a popular beach restaurant.

A member of the public discovered the 49-year-old woman’s body near Eastern Beach Pavilion in Geelong, southwest of Melbourne, about 11.25am on Wednesday.

They alerted lifeguards who attempted to revive the woman with CPR until emergency services arrived, but she could not be saved.

Victoria Police on Wednesday night confirmed officers had arrested a 53-year-old man in Geelong CBD

‘The man, who is of no fixed address, will be interviewed in relation to the woman’s death,’ it said.

‘Detectives believe the people involved are known to one another.

‘The investigation remains ongoing.’

City of Greater Geelong chief executive Ali Wastie said police would analyse CCTV of the area as part of its investigation.

‘I want to praise the first responders for their prompt efforts in this tragic situation, and also recognise the community member who alerted the lifeguards,’ she said.

Plain clothed police remained at the scene at 8.15pm. It’s understood a suitcase and trolley found near a children’s pool have been collected as evidence.

Regular beachgoers told the Geelong Advertiser the deceased woman had frequently been seen ‘sleeping on a park bench’ in the area, adding ‘she appeared to be homeless’.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
