Pentecost Senior High School (PENSEC), located in Koforidua in the Eastern Region of Ghana, stands today as a shining example of how faith-based institutions can contribute significantly to national development through quality education. The school was established in February 2000 by the Church of Pentecost, one of the largest Christian denominations in Ghana, with the vision of providing a morally sound and academically excellent education for Ghanaian youth.

The founding of PENSEC was inspired by the Church’s commitment to holistic human development. Recognizing the growing need for secondary education in the Eastern Region, especially in Koforidua, the Church of Pentecost took the bold initiative to set up a school that would nurture students both spiritually and intellectually. The school began with just 110 students and 16 dedicated staff members, operating from modest facilities but driven by a profound sense of mission and purpose.

In its formative years, PENSEC faced many of the challenges typical of a young institution, including infrastructural limitations and limited public recognition. However, the strong backing of the Church of Pentecost, coupled with the tireless efforts of the teaching staff, students, and local community, propelled the school forward. It quickly earned a reputation for discipline, academic seriousness, and spiritual grounding.

A major milestone in the school’s history came in 2015, when PENSEC was officially absorbed into Ghana’s public education system by the Ministry of Education. This transition marked a new phase of growth and recognition. By that time, the student population had grown to an impressive 1,915, and the school had begun attracting students from different parts of the region and beyond. The absorption into the public system brought increased resources and integration into the national curriculum and standards.

The school’s academic performance has been one of its most commendable achievements. Over the years, students of PENSEC have consistently excelled in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). For example, in 2019, the school recorded a remarkable 74.79% overall pass rate, with 546 out of 731 candidates passing all subjects. Certain subjects, including Physics, Chemistry, Business Management, Economics, and ICT, recorded a 100% pass rate, showcasing the school’s academic strength and quality instruction.

In recognition of its growing stature, the Ghana Education Service reclassified the school from a Grade “D” to a Grade “A” Senior High School, a notable achievement that reflects its performance, facilities, discipline, and contribution to national education. This upgrade positioned PENSEC among the elite senior high schools in Ghana.

Beyond academics, PENSEC places strong emphasis on moral and spiritual development. As a school under the auspices of the Church of Pentecost, Christian values such as integrity, discipline, humility, and service are deeply ingrained in the school culture. Students participate in regular devotion sessions, moral instruction, and character-building programs aimed at nurturing future leaders of high moral standing.

The Church of Pentecost continues to be instrumental in the development of the school. Over the years, the Church has donated key infrastructure and equipment to support teaching and learning. Notably, in 2019, the La Area of the Church donated 103 mono desks and 20 desktop computers to enhance ICT education. Other donations from various Church areas have included boreholes, furniture for dining halls, and classroom blocks. This consistent support has made a profound impact on the quality of education and student life at the school.

In October 2024, the school launched its 25th Anniversary celebration under the theme: “25 Years of Nurturing Future Leaders of Excellence and Virtue: The PENSEC Story.” This milestone was not only a time of celebration but also a moment of reflection on the school’s journey, achievements, and the lives it has transformed. Events during the anniversary included exhibitions, a founders’ day service, award ceremonies, and a public call for alumni to contribute to the school’s future development.

Today, PENSEC has grown into a vibrant academic community with over 2,000 students and a dedicated staff of 159 teaching and non-teaching personnel. It offers a variety of academic programs including General Science, Business, General Arts, Home Economics, and Visual Arts. The school boasts modern facilities including science laboratories, a computer lab, a library, sports fields, and boarding facilities.

Pentecost Senior High School continues to uphold its motto: “Excellence and Virtue.” Guided by its founding mission, the school remains committed to shaping students who are not only academically competent but also morally upright and socially responsible. With the continued support of the Church of Pentecost, the Ghana Education Service, alumni, and the broader community, PENSEC is poised to remain a beacon of hope, knowledge, and faith for generations to come.
