TWO Ghanaian para swimmers are set to represent the country in the first-ever World Para Swimming Series from February 20–22, at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre, Australia.

The local para-swimming association announced that this was the first time, Ghana would be represented at the prestigious international event.

The athletes, Promise Wonder Atsu Aheto and Bryan Baffour Kwadjo Akoto, would travel to Australia to undergo international classification and compete in the World Para Swimming Series.

The championship serves as a qualifying pathway towards the 2026 Commonwealth Games, making it a significant step in Ghana’s pursuit of elite international para sport competition.

Both swimmers are scheduled to compete in the 50 metres freestyle, 50 metres breaststroke, and 100 metres breaststroke events.

Their participation represents a breakthrough for Ghana Para Swimming, offering the athletes an opportunity to obtain international classification and potentially meet qualification standards for future major global competitions.

The Association expressed appreciation to the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) for its financial support, which has made the participation possible.

The milestone reflects collaboration among the Ghana Para Swimming Association, the National Paralympic Committee of Ghana (NPC-Ghana), and the GOC, underscoring a shared commitment to expanding opportunities for Ghanaian para-athletes.

As the swimmers prepare for the competition in Australia, stakeholders have expressed optimism that their participation would pave the way for greater development of para swimming in Ghana.-GNA
