A hiker experienced a terrifying tumble after attempting to save her dog from falling down a 60-foot drop.

Margaux Cohen was hiking the Tricouni Peak, a 10.9-mile trail in British Columbia, Canada, when she found herself off the path.

Cohen, her hiking partner, Max Stobbe, and Stobbe’s cousin came across a wall blocking their path to get back onto the trail.

Stobbe went over the wall first, and when Cohen passed her dog, Zion, he slipped and lost his footing, she recalled to local news outlet Squamish Chief.

As she watched her beloved pup sliding down the wall, Cohen said that her first instinct was to grab Zion’s harness.

But Zion’s weight pulled Cohen down with him, and she fell 60 feet, smashing her face into rocks and ultimately breaking her leg.

‘It wasn’t a straight fall. I tumbled down like, four times. So I probably fell 20 feet, and then hit my face on rocks, and then fell again and again and again,’ she told Squamish Chief.

Cohen didn’t lose consciousness during her fall and started screaming for help when she stopped tumbling.

Her hiking group made their way to her and called emergency authorities. Luckily, Zion survived the fall and was in good spirits with just an injured paw.

‘My dog was like, sitting next to me, just wagging his tail, like nothing happened, like he just had the time of his life,’ she said.

Cohen told the local outlet that she waited two hours for the search and rescue team in the blistering heat.

While she waited, she couldn’t help but panic about her condition. Cohen said that the left side of her face was swollen and had gone numb.

She had a nosebleed and her leg was in severe pain. Squamish Search and Rescue teams rescued Cohen, and she was transported to a local hospital.

The avid hiker revealed that her injury was extensive, requiring two surgeries where doctors will install plates and screws in her leg.

She told Squamish Chief that she’ll most likely be barred from physical activities for the next four months as she recovers.

The hospital bed is a drastic change in scenery for the hiker and mountain lover. Cohen, originally from France, has amassed a following on social media for her adventures in the wilderness.

Her Instagram has documented her move to British Columbia. In July, she shared a photo carousel of her hike at the Golden Ears Summit.

Cohen shared on her Instagram Story that she’s been in the hospital for over a week. She was awaiting a second surgery on Tuesday, but revealed it was postponed.

‘The last 8 days have been very tough. Lot of tears, anxiety, and a few meltdowns. Being stuck in a bed is not fun and i cant wait to be back in my apartment,’ she confessed.

On Tuesday evening, she shared that she didn’t get the surgery she was scheduled for and didn’t know when it would be rescheduled.

Cohen is going on her tenth day in a hospital bed. She said that she can’t move her leg, resulting in muscle pain on top of the fracture.

Cohen’s best friend has launched a GoFundMe to help her pay for medical expenses and provide financial support during her recovery.

‘Margaux is one of the most kindhearted, adventurous, and resilient people I know,’ the fundraiser description read.

‘She has always been there to support others, and now she needs our help. Any donation, no matter the size, will make a huge difference for her and her furry best friend’.
