A Canadian CEO and three other members of his family were severely injured during a home invasion in one of Toronto’s most affluent neighborhoods.
Three masked men broke into Mac Group CEO David Morton’s house around 3.45am on Sunday while he and his family were home inside their gated Hyde Park Circle community, where residences sell for millions of dollars.
Two of the men were armed with handguns, while the third was armed with a hammer, police said.
Morton and his two adult daughters, Maggie and Cristina Zohil-Morton, were shot during the home invasion, police said. Morton’s wife, Doriana Zohil, was struck with a hammer.
All four members of the family were rushed to the hospital. Two have ‘life-altering injuries,’ and the other two have severe but ‘non-life-threatening injuries,’ Toronto Police Inspector Kristy Smith said at a press conference.
Smith did not say exactly which of the family members suffered which injuries.
The inspector told reporters that there was ‘a struggle’ in the home after the masked men demanded valuables, and ‘the suspects fired their guns multiple times.’
‘Whether or not they escaped with anything is uncertain,’ she added.

A source told the Toronto Sun that the family ‘tried to fight off’ the home invaders before they were shot.
The source added that Morton and one of his daughters were shot in the leg, while his other daughter was shot in the arm. The outlet also reported that all four of the family members were struck in the head with a hammer.
Police said that the masked men escaped in an SUV after the horrific shooting but that there was no description of the suspects authorities could provide.
The family had surveillance cameras inside the home, and the footage has been handed over to police.
‘We have no information at this point to suspect that this particular home was targeted by the suspects,’ Smith said.
‘I’m not quite sure what their motives are at this time and whether or not they were in the area looking at other houses prior.’

The inspector added: ‘People should be able to feel safe in their homes. I want to assure residents that the Toronto Police Service will do everything that we can to identify, locate, and bring these suspects to criminal justice.’
Smith said that there has been a recent rise in violent home invasions in affluent neighborhoods throughout Toronto.
‘Across the city we’ve seen the carjackings decline and the home invasions increase for the purpose of stealing a car,’ the inspector said.
