Chairman of Parliament’s Energy Committee, Emmanuel Bedzrah, has promised not to approve any proposal brought forward by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), for tariff adjustments.

Speaking in an interview with JoyNews and monitored by GhanaWeb on Wednesday, September 9, 2025, Bedzrah stated that the ECG has lost confidence of both lawmakers and the public, making it unworthy of any tariff support.

“Honestly, even when I was at the other side of the aisle, when I was a ranking member for Water Resources, Works and Housing, I remember in one of our conversations with PURC, I told them that I would even approve about 300% for them at that time. But sitting here as Chairman of the Energy Committee and listening to PURC, ECG and all the institutions under PURC, I will not approve anything that ECG brings to us,” he remarked.

He added that his committee’s page has been flooded with bipartisan criticisms of ECG’s management.

“Nobody will accept this. In fact, I am going to call the PURC Executive Secretary that they shouldn’t bring it to us. The last time they increased the 17%, we told them they should have consulted us. They didn’t consult us. How can you increase ECG tariff to 225%?” he asked.

Here are the utility tariff hikes proposed for 2025Here’s why ECG is proposing a 225% tariff hike in the coming years

His comments come in the wake of ECG’s request to the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission, (PURC), for a 225 percent increase in its Distribution Service Charge.

ECG has submitted a proposal for a massive 225% increase in its Distribution Service Charge (DSC1).

If approved by the PURC, the increment will raise the DSC1 from its current GHp19.0384/kWh to an average of GHp61 8028/kWh for the 2025–2029 tariff period.

The power distributor, which serves more than 73% of the population, argues that the current tariff is unsustainable and the steep increase is necessary to avert financial collapse and ensure reliable power supply.
