The Ghana Police Service has recently made headlines for successfully disbanding major criminal gangs under the leadership of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohunu.

Since the appointment of IGP Tetteh Yohunu, the police has arrested a good number of notorious criminals belonging to gangs engaged in various crimes, from illicit drug smuggling to armed robbery.

Some of these arrests are for crimes that predate the appointment of the new leadership of the police.

The Ghana Police Service, under the leadership of IGP Yohunu, has received plaudits for the speed with which suspects are arrested.

Let us take a look at some of the major arrests under the new leadership of the police.

President Mahama sacks Dampare, appoints Yohuno as IGP

Arrest of robbers who attack a Council of State member:

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, on January 29, 2025, announced the arrest of seven suspects in connection with a highway robbery involving a member of the Council of State, which occurred along the Tamale-Buipe Highway in July 2025.

According to the Director-General of the CID, COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, the arrests followed months of intelligence-led investigations and targeted operations by the Police Anti-Armed Robbery Unit.

“The police has arrested seven suspects in a highway robbery involving a Council of State member, which occurred sometime last year.

“The victim was travelling along the Tamale-Buipe Highway when he was attacked by six armed men who robbed him of personal belongings, including mobile phones, some cash, wristwatches, reading glasses, a laptop, and other items,” she said at a press briefing on January 29, 2026.

Arrest of seven infamous highway robbers:

On January 10, 2026, the Accra Regional Police Command, in collaboration with the Eastern Regional Police Command, apprehended seven (7) members of a notorious highway robbery syndicate believed to be responsible for a series of violent robberies across Greater Accra, Eastern, and Ashanti Regions.

The suspects arrested were Salim Mohammed, also known as Kwaku Nuah, aged 27; Kofi Ishmael, also known as Ishmael Addo; Kwame Bediako, also known as Star Boy and Nkorkpor, identified as the ringleader; Kwadwo Kaloyi, also known as Aticho; Mumuni Abdul Razak, also known as Mogambo, aged 39; Kwasi Akambuley, also known as Kwasi Fresh, aged 27; and Kwame Bonsu, also known as Killer Ntua.

According to the police, the gang on November 29, 2025, attacked a house at Peduase near Aburi.

Investigations later led officers to Avenor in Accra, where a 30-year-old suspect, Kofi Ishmael, was arrested on January 6, 2026.

During interrogation, he admitted his role in the robbery and mentioned Kwame Bediako, also known as Star Boy, as the leader of the group.

This led to the arrest of Bediako and, subsequently, the other suspects.

Further investigations revealed that the group had been targeting motorists and trailer drivers along the Tema Motorway, Achimota Forest Road, Pokuase, Amasaman, Suhum, Nkawkaw, and the Juaso-Kumasi stretch.

The police said the suspects were preparing to carry out another robbery at the time of their arrest.

Arrest of suspects in 2024 GH¢7.5m Adabraka Jewellery robbery:

On December 31, 2025, the police announced a breakthrough in its investigation into the robbery of a jewellery shop in Adabraka, which occurred on November 2, 2024.

The police announced the arrest of a suspect, identified as Ali Mohammed, popularly known as “Bawasam”. He was arrested on November 20, 2025, while receiving medical treatment at a hospital in Ashaiman.

On January 9, 2026, the police announced the arrest of two additional suspects, Hamza Agerego and Alhassan Elliasu, in an operation by the Office of the Special Operations Assistant to the Inspector-General of Police.

Three other suspects – Nashiru Abubakari, alias “Soldier”, Fatao Mohammed, popularly known as “Motorway”, and a third individual operating under the name “50Cent” – were also arrested subsequently.

    Volta cocaine busts:

The Volta Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service, in January 2026, busted two drug trafficking operations.

The first incident occurred on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, when a task force comprising personnel from the Regional Police Intelligence Directorate (PID), Drug Law Enforcement Unit (DLEU), and the Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), acting on intelligence, mounted a checkpoint at Kpotame on the Accra-Aflao Highway.

A Nigeria-bound Liberty Jeep was intercepted with a consignment of compressed substances suspected to be cocaine, and valued at approximately GH¢1,032,650.00. The driver, Charles Adenkule, 46, allegedly offered the officers a bribe of US$20,000, which they rejected.

The suspect was arrested and transported to Ho, the regional capital, for interrogation.

The second operation took place on Friday, January 23, 2026, when another team from the PID, DLEU, and the Regional Criminal Investigation Department (CID), acting on intelligence that narcotic drugs were being transported to Ho, mounted a snap checkpoint at OLA Top, a suburb of the municipality.

A few hours later, a Ghana Health Service (GHS) Ford bus approached the checkpoint but failed to stop when signalled and sped off. The vehicle was later intercepted and searched, leading to the discovery of 26 maxi sacks containing 2,045 yellow oval-shaped parcels of compressed leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, with a street value of GH¢1,022,500.

The driver, Godsway Kwaku Dogbey, 38, who officials of the Ghana Health Service confirmed is a staff member, is currently assisting with investigations.

    1,613 drug parcels bust:

The Tema Regional Police Command intercepted a total of 1,613 parcels of substances suspected to be narcotic drugs following what it described as a “well-coordinated intelligence operation” along the Akosombo-Tema Road.

According to the police, the operation was triggered by intelligence received on January 10, 2026, indicating that suspected narcotic substances were being transported from the Volta Region towards Tema.

“Police teams quickly mounted surveillance along the route, focusing on the Agomeda Junction area,” portions of the police statement dated Tuesday, January 13, 2026, read.

The police added that at about 12:45 am on January 11, 2026, they intercepted two vehicles, a white Toyota Highlander with registration number GS 2013-13 and a black Mitsubishi Pajero with registration number GC 400-22.

The vehicles, she added, were being driven by two suspects, identified as Isaac Odol, 33, and Kwame Mani, 39.

Police intercept bus carrying 396 suspected parcels of cannabis:

Police in Yeji, within the Pru East District of the Bono East Region, also intercepted a Tata bus allegedly transporting 396 parcels of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis.

The interception took place on Sunday, January 11, 2026, after the district police command, acting on sustained surveillance, stopped the bus with registration number GR 3232 L near the barrier in front of the Yeji Police Station.

According to a report by adomonline.com on January 12, 2026, the Yeji District Police Commander, DSP Ahenkrah, stated that intelligence had indicated the vehicle was carrying illegal drugs.

The driver, Seidu Alhassan, and his mate, Issah Osman, were arrested to assist police investigations aimed at identifying the owner of the suspected substances.

Police intercept over 2,000 rounds of AK-47 ammunition, bulletproof vests bound for Walewale

The Ghana Police Service also, in December 2025, intercepted thousands of rounds of ammunition heading for Walewale in the North East Region by officers in the Ashanti Region.

According to a post shared by the police, in addition to the over 2,000 rounds of bullets, the police also intercepted bulletproof vests and other items.

The bullets and the other intercepted items were discovered in a vehicle heading for Walewale. Three people, including the driver of the vehicle, were arrested during the operation.

“The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has arrested two suspects for unlawful possession of 2,600 AK-47 ammunition and related accoutrements at the Kantanso-Asankare Police Barrier in the Ashanti Region.

The suspects, Kwame Afram, a bus driver, and Godfred Essel, a mate, were arrested on December 26, 2025, when police officers on duty intercepted a Kia Granbird bus with registration number GT 5771-18 at the Kantanso-Asankare Police Barrier while travelling from Accra towards Walewale en route to Paga,” part of the statement issued by the police read.

Police intercept bus with over 1,000 rounds of ammunition

The police again, in January 2026, intercepted a passenger bus conveying a large quantity of ammunition without lawful authority at the Kantanso-Asankare barrier in the Juaso District.

The vehicle, which had the registration number AK 1309-21, was travelling from Accra to Tamale en route to Savelugu and was being driven by 42-year-old Mohammed Gzali, with his mate, Mohammed Jabir, aged 22, and 45 passengers on board.

During the inspection, police officers became suspicious that the vehicle might be transporting prohibited items and immediately alerted their superiors.
