Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh

The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has called for leniency in the case of Ms Bernice Aboagye, a staff nurse from Nkenkansu, who was issued a query by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) for allegedly using “unprintable, inappropriate, and scandalous” language against him in viral protest videos circulating on social media.

In a press release issued on October 12, 2025, by the Head of Health Training Institutions and Ministry spokesperson, Tony Goodman, the Ministry acknowledged GHS’s swift action in addressing Ms Aboagye’s conduct, which it noted violated the Service’s Code of Conduct.

While commending the GHS for upholding professional standards, the minister urged the Service to “temper justice with mercy” in handling the matter.

“The Minister commends the Ghana Health Service for promptly upholding the tenets of professionalism and the Code of Conduct prescribed for health workers.

“However, Hon. Akandoh has appealed to the Service to temper justice with mercy in addressing the matter. According to him, both he and the government welcome divergent views and constructive criticism as part of his commitment to fostering tolerance and openness to diverse opinions,’ the statement said.

The Minister, however, appealed to health workers to express their opinions responsibly and respectfully, avoiding insults to promote the healthy development of the health sector.

The ministry reiterated its support for demonstrations as a legitimate constitutional right to express frustrations but stressed that it will not condone abusive language or acts of indiscipline during such actions.

It also called on all health professionals to exercise caution in their public communications and social media engagements to maintain the sector’s integrity.

In its query dated October 10, 2025, GHS stated that Ms Aboagye has until October 24, 2025, to issue a response detailing why sanctions should not be proffered against her for violating their Code of Conduct.

Attached to the query is the viral video in which the nurse, during a recent protest by some aggrieved nurses to demand payment of their 10-month salaries, spoke critically of the minister.
