At the recent presidential inauguration in Accra’s famed Black Star Square, a moment of unexpected excitement developed, capturing the attention of both attendees and the media. Hassan Ayariga, the founder and head of the All People’s Congress (APC), made an indelible impression on the gathering with an unusual display of excitement. As the inauguration progressed amid the festive atmosphere, Ayariga took to the rooftop of his truck, creating a spectacle that many will remember.

In a move that appeared to contravene the typical decorum connected with such formal occasions, Ayariga dropped 20 Ghana cedi notes into the audience below. This unexpected move elicited laughs, cheers, and wide-eyed amazement from those present. It rapidly became a little spectacle, with crowds rushing to grab the fluttering notes as they danced through the air. The enthusiasm shared at that moment reflected not just the joyful atmosphere of the inauguration, but also the playful side of political speech.

Ayariga’s acts have spurred talks that extend beyond the excitement of the day, as attendees and pundits alike consider the consequences of this playful generosity. While some may see it as a humorous interaction with the audience, others question the appropriate behavior required of political leaders during major occasions. Regardless of interpretation, the brief interlude served as a reminder of political leaders’ human side, capable of generating joy and surprise among serious conversations about governance and national policy.

As Ghana enters a new age with newly elected officials, instances like this serve as a reminder to citizens of the necessity of public-representative interaction and accessibility. Hassan Ayariga’s colorful act on that special day serves as a symbol of hope and a call to renewed engagement, reminding everyone engaged that politics can also be a source of community and enjoyment. It’s unclear whether this fun act will translate into long-term goodwill, but it certainly offered a memorable touch to the inauguration festivities.
