Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has proposed the introduction of a nationwide cultural dress day for students, aimed at promoting Ghana’s rich cultural heritage and strengthening national pride among young people.

The idea, he explained, was inspired by President John Dramani Mahama’s recent appearance in a traditional fugu during his visit to Zambia a moment he described as a powerful and dignified display of Ghanaian identity on the international stage.

Speaking at the Global Closing Ceremony of the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ2025), Iddrisu praised the warm reception and recognition President Mahama received, describing it as exceptional.

How President Mahama sparked calls for a ‘National Fugu Day’

“President Mahama got the best honours that I have ever experienced in my life as a visiting president to another republic,” he said.

According to the education minister, the moment should serve as a reminder of the importance of deliberately promoting Ghanaian culture, particularly within the education system.

He suggested that the Ghana Education Service (GES) could designate a special day referred to as “Our Day” on which students across the country would be encouraged to attend school in traditional attire that reflects their cultural background.

“Every Ghanaian learner must go in a culturally fitting dress to observe the day nationwide, so that each culture and society can reflect its values as we celebrate together,” he proposed.

If adopted, the initiative would see students from different ethnic groups proudly wearing traditional clothing, turning classrooms into a colourful showcase of Ghana’s diverse cultural identity.

The proposal is intended to boost cultural awareness, instill pride in indigenous traditions and promote unity by helping students appreciate the values and heritage of communities beyond their own.
