Haruna Iddrisu is the Minister of Education Haruna Iddrisu is the Minister of Education

A recent Global InfoAnalytics poll has predicted the possibility of Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, leading the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as its flagbearer in the 2028 general elections.

Speaking on JoyNews on July 4, 2025, the Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, Mussa Dankwah, provided insights into the poll, including the data collected and the sample size used.

‘NDC is like Liverpool now, they are in top form’ – NPP Okoe Boye

He stated that 27% of NDC members prefer Haruna Iddrisu to lead the party into the 2028 Election, ahead of other key party figures such as Johnson Asiedu Nketiah and Julius Debrah.

“… If you ask them, who would you want to lead the NDC in the 2028 elections, 27 % of them said Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister of Education. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah 26%, Dr Ato Forson 22%, and it’s a very tight race; Julius Debrah 11%, Honorable Ablakwa 8%, Zanetor 4% and the rest of them 3%. So, all the names that you will be thinking about is part of the 3%,” he said.

The pollster indicated that among members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), 31% prefer Asiedu Nketiah to lead the opposition, a stark contrast to the preferences within the NDC itself.

“Among the NPP, 23% want Haruna, 31% want Mosquito [Asiedu Nketiah], 20% prefer Ato Forson, Debrah with 13%, Ablakwa 5%, Agyeman-Rawlings 5% and others, 3%.”

He continued; “Look at the NDC base, 30% want Haruna, 24% want Mosquito, 22% want Ato Forson, 11% want Debrah. The race is amongst these four people and then among floating voters you can see the numbers there as well. Now, if you compare this data to what we did in April, you could see that Haruna has gone up from 25% to 27%. What happened in July is that we dropped Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang from the list, so her numbers begin to realign. Asiedu Nketiah is the biggest gainer in that decision to drop Opoku-Agyemang.”

Dankwah added that based on his observation, there is a generational divide within the NDC.

He explained that a majority of those who voted for President John Dramani Mahama in the party’s previous primaries are now shifting their support toward younger candidates.

NDC had superior message – Defeated NPP candidate admits

“I think what we are seeing in the NDC race is a generational divide. If you look at people who, in 2024, voted for John Mahama, and how they are voting for the NDC primaries, you could see that the combined votes of Ablakwa, Zanetor, Ato Forson and Haruna account for 65 % of John Mahama’s voters. So, it means 65% of John Mahama voters are looking elsewhere than the older generation,” he concluded.
