Harry Maguire believes the blame for Manchester United‘s dismal Premier League campaign lies firmly with the players.

The Red Devils are coming to the end of what has been their worst ever Premier League season with the potential saving grace being Europa League glory.

Ruben Amorim‘s men sit 16th in the top flight with just 10 wins from 36 games and a club-record 17 defeats.

‘It’s been really tough in the Premier League we can’t hide away from that,’ Maguire said in an interview with Sky Sports. ‘It’s been nowhere near good enough for this club.

‘If you look at the table it’s embarrassing, especially for us players. We’ve got to take the responsibility because we’ve had two managers and loads of opportunities to win football matches and we just haven’t done it well enough this season.

‘I think the last two months have been difficult because we’ve been in the Europa League and we haven’t played a settled team throughout the Premier League. The managers had to change a lot, we’ve had a lot of injuries.

‘Although we should be doing a lot better… for example I can’t remember the last time I played 90 minutes in the Premier League.

‘We’ve got to take the blame because a club like man united should not have nothing to play for with two months left of the season.

‘We’re sat in mid table with two months left of the season and we’ve got nothing to play for.

‘That’s our fault, we’ve got to take responsibility. That’s unacceptable for sure, we’re at the blame and I know for a fact next season we will improve a lot.’

Erik ten Hag was sacked in October with United sitting 14th with just three wins from their opening nine games.

Amorim came in with plenty of expectation but results have only gotten worse on the domestic front, despite Manchester United making next Wednesday’s Europa League final against Tottenham, who have experienced a similarly poor Premier League campaign.

A victory in the final would earn Manchester United a spot in next season’s Champions League, which would at least end their campaign on a positive note.

Amorim has not held back in his brutal assessment of United’s form, labelling his Red Devils side the ‘worst team in the Premier League’, risking upsetting his players.

Speaking on Amorim’s honesty, Maguire added: ‘Yes, he’s really honest. He tells us how it is and has done since coming in. He knows it’s not been anywhere near good enough so he’s not going to try and make up excuses.

‘Some managers would, maybe to try and cover their own back, or for the players. But it’s really pleasing on our behalf that he doesn’t pass the blame on, we players take responsibility because we’ve had two managers now and it has been nowhere near good enough. It’s hard to put a finger on it but we’ve just been so disappointing.’
