The President and Chairperson of Voice of the Nation and General Deputy Secretary of the African Development and Monitoring Group (ADAM-GH), Hajia Mariam Mohammed, has appealed for calm following the recent chieftaincy conflict at Asamankese in the Eastern Region, which resulted in a violent confrontation between some youth and the police on Saturday, October 25, 2025.

Hajia Mariam has also called on President John Dramani Mahama to intervene and help broker peace between the rival factions to restore stability and ensure lasting harmony in the area.

Speaking to the press, she expressed deep concern about the frequent recurrence of violent disputes in traditional communities, attributing the situation largely to youth unemployment and lack of empowerment. She said many young people are easily manipulated by factions in disputes due to economic hardship and lack of direction.

She therefore urged chiefs, opinion leaders, and relevant stakeholders to take deliberate steps to build the capacity of the youth and provide them with opportunities that will make them productive citizens rather than tools for unrest.

The Asamankese chieftaincy dispute escalated on Sunday when police clashed with followers of one of the rival chiefs during the burial of six royals. The clash left at least three people injured, with some police vehicles damaged.

Reports indicate that tension had been building in the community after the Akua Korang Akwamu Abrade Royal Family announced plans to perform funeral rites for their deceased royals despite opposition from the embattled Chief of Asamankese, Osabarima Adu Darko II, who had sought a court injunction against the ceremony.

Police intervention to prevent further disturbances led to chaos and gunfire, prompting reinforcement to restore calm. The affected royals were later buried at midnight.

The Akua Korang Akwamu Abrade Family, led by Osabarima Kentinka Pobi Asomaning, has since renewed calls for government action to bring finality to the protracted chieftaincy dispute. The family maintains that despite securing multiple rulings from the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs, the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council, and the High Court in Koforidua, enforcement has stalled, prolonging tension in the area.

Police say investigations into the incident are ongoing.
