Gyan: Black Stars places must be earned, not guaranteed

Former Asamoah Gyan has challenged players in the Ghana Premier League to prove they can compete at the highest level if they hope to earn places in the Black Stars squad.

The ex-Ghana captain made the remarks amid growing discussions over calls for a quota system that would guarantee places for home-based players in the national team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Some football stakeholders have argued that increasing local representation in the Black Stars would help Ghanaian clubs benefit financially from FIFA’s club compensation programme during the tournament.

Speaking to Channel One TV, Gyan insisted selection should be based on quality and the ability to perform internationally rather than simply playing in the domestic league.

The former striker reflected on his own rise from local football to the national team, noting that players from his generation consistently proved themselves against top opposition.

“When we talk about the Black Stars, it’s about international football,” Gyan said. “If you’re a local player and you cannot compete internationally, how do you expect to be part of the Black Stars?”

A largely home-based Black Stars squad has been selected to face Mexico national football team in a friendly on May 22 as preparations continue for the World Cup.
