The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has declared December 13 to 20, 2025, as National Sanitation Week – Christmas Edition, as part of efforts to ensure a clean, safe, and healthy environment ahead of the festive season.

The Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, announced the initiative and called on all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs), stakeholders, and citizens to actively participate in the nationwide sanitation exercise.

According to the Minister, National Sanitation Week is intended to promote collective responsibility and community action to improve environmental cleanliness, particularly during the Christmas period, when population movement and waste generation increase significantly.

“All Assemblies, stakeholders, and residents must join hands to keep our cities clean, safe, and welcoming for the season,” Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim stated.

In Greater Accra, Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) have pledged their full support for the national sanitation agenda. Speaking on behalf of the Assemblies, the Dean of Greater Accra MMDCEs, Desmond Sowah Laryae, commended the Minister’s leadership and assured of intensified sanitation activities across the region.

He noted that Assemblies will step up clean-up exercises, strengthen supervision, and mobilise communities to ensure visible and sustainable improvements during the sanitation week.

“As Assemblies, we are committed to delivering lasting results by working closely with communities and stakeholders to improve environmental cleanliness across the region,” Hon. Laryae said.

The Minister also issued a strong warning to MMDCEs nationwide, revealing that the President will take action against Assemblies that fail to meet sanitation targets.

As National Sanitation Week approaches, Ahmed Ibrahim stressed the need for strong leadership, strict supervision, and active community mobilisation, noting that sanitation remains critical to public health, safety, and national development.

The Ministry has urged citizens to take ownership of their surroundings and support Assembly-led initiatives to ensure a cleaner Ghana during and beyond the Christmas festivities.
