The Ghanaian government is reportedly scheduled to meet with top executives of Gold Fields today, April 22, 2025, for high-level discussions on ensuring a seamless transition of the Damang Mine in the Western Region.

According to a report by myjoyonline.com, the meeting will include senior officials from Gold Fields’ Group Head Office in South Africa.

Key agenda items include a possible extension of Gold Fields’ management of the mine prior to a complete handover to the state.

The government is reportedly open to allowing the company additional oversight time to prevent operational disruptions.

Gold Fields had earlier requested an extended transition period, and indications suggest the government may approve this, subject to specific conditions.

Meanwhile, authorities have urged Gold Fields to maintain equipment operations at the Damang Mine, with workers instructed to remain at their posts pending further directives.

    Background

Earlier in April, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, announced the government’s takeover of the Damang Mine following the Minerals Commission’s refusal to extend Gold Fields’ operational permit.

However, today’s discussions could revise the transition timeline, potentially granting Gold Fields up to a year of continued management before full state control.
