A leading member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Kwame Jantuah, has urged the John Dramani Mahama-led administration to ban all forms of mining activities in the country.

Speaking during a panel discussion on GH ONE TV on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, he cautioned the president against repeating the mistakes of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who failed to sustain efforts in combating illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey.

“President Mahama’s fight against galamsey should not fail like former President Akufo-Addo’s. Let’s ban all forms of mining until we put a proper framework in place. Former President Akufo-Addo tried, didn’t he? What happened? He put his job on the line, but nothing changed.

“President Mahama should bite the bullet and ban it for now. Let’s establish a strong framework because gold mining provides employment,” he noted.

As part of efforts to combat the illegal mining menace, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has launched the Blue Water Guard training program, an innovative module under the Blue Water Initiative.

This initiative will equip 2,000 young people with the skills and knowledge necessary to protect river bodies from illegal miners.

Under phase one of the project, 400 young individuals will undergo rigorous training by the Ghana Navy Riverine Command under the auspices of the Minerals Commission.

The training will provide them with the expertise needed to combat illegal mining operations on river bodies.
