The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that eight Ghanaians have died following a terrorist attack in Titao, in northern Burkina Faso and announced new travel guidelines for citizens.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, the Ministry said the attack, which occurred on February 14, 2026, initially claimed the lives of seven members of the Ghana National Tomatoes Traders and Transporters Association who were engaged in lawful trading activities in the area.

A later development pushed the death toll to eight.

“The Government of the Republic of Ghana regrets to inform that the recent jihadist attack of 14th February, 2026, in Titao, in the northern province of Burkina Faso, has now claimed eight Ghanaian lives,” the statement said.

According to the ministry, the eighth victim was among four Ghanaians who had sustained serious injuries and were receiving treatment.

“The latest victim, also a member of the Association, was one of four compatriots who sustained serious injuries and were receiving medical treatment before succumbing,” it added.

President John Dramani Mahama and the Government have conveyed condolences to the bereaved families.

“President John Mahama and the Government of Ghana convey profound commiserations to the families and loved ones of all who have lost their lives,” the statement noted.

The Government strongly condemned the attack and expressed solidarity with Burkina Faso.

“The Government of Ghana strongly condemns this mindless act of terror and expresses its solidarity with the Government and people of Burkina Faso in this dark hour,” it stated.

In response to the tragedy, the Government has arranged for the immediate medical evacuation of injured victims.

“On the instructions of President Mahama and with competent medical consultations, the Government of Ghana has decided to immediately conduct medical evacuation by air of all Ghanaian victims in Burkina Faso. The victims are expected in Ghana later today. The Ghana Air Force is carrying out the evacuation,” it said.

The Ministry also indicated that Ghana’s diplomatic mission in Burkina Faso is actively engaging with authorities and supporting affected citizens. It acknowledged the cooperation of the Burkinabè government in facilitating interventions.

Meanwhile, the Ministry has issued fresh travel advice, urging Ghanaians to exercise caution when travelling to high-risk areas. It advised citizens planning to undertake essential travel to first contact the Ministry or Ghana’s embassies for guidance.

For those already living in areas of concern, the statement recommended restricting movement, maintaining regular communication with Ghana’s embassies, and keeping identification documents accessible to ensure swift consular assistance if needed.

“The safety, security, and well-being of Ghanaians remain our utmost priority, and further updates would be provided in this matter as and when necessary,” the Ministry assured.

Ghanaians in distress or requiring urgent consular assistance have been encouraged to contact the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through its designated emergency lines and email addresses.
