The government has intensified security measures along the Walewale-Bolgatanga Highway following a surge in attacks on passenger buses. Military personnel and drone surveillance have been deployed to curb the rising violence.

Minister for the Interior, Mr. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, disclosed this in Parliament on March 18, 2025, in response to concerns raised by the MP for Walewale. He acknowledged that while armed robbery cases in the area had declined—from 30 incidents in 2022 to 18 in 2024—the attacks on passenger buses remained a serious issue.

He attributed the spike in highway violence to the ongoing Bawku chieftaincy conflict, which has spilled over into surrounding regions, contributing to insecurity.

To combat the situation, the government imposed a curfew on Walewale and its environs on February 15, 2025, while reinforcing security operations. Additional police officers have been deployed from Tamale to support the Walewale District Command, along with new patrol vehicles and three police bases in Walewale, Janga, and Gombiliga. Each base is manned by 30 officers.

To protect traders, authorities have introduced police escorts for market women traveling to and from Walewale’s markets.
