Veteran Ghanaian gospel musician, Joe Beecham, has reflected on the evolution of gospel music in Ghana, noting significant changes in production quality, technology and industry recognition over the years.
Speaking in an interview with GhanaWeb‘s Isaac Dadzie after the 2025 Praise Achievement Awards on December 14, 2025, Joe explained that modern gospel music has benefited greatly from advancements in studio technology and recording equipment.
According to him, earlier recordings lacked the sophisticated software available today to correct vocal pitch or edit performances.
“The generation is a bit different from that of the past. It is growing. We have better studios now and better equipment. I don’t know if you’ve seen Joe Mettel’s studio, but the difference is “clear. When we were recording in the past, it was one direct take. You started singing from top to bottom without any cuts. If you made a mistake, you had to start all over again.

“There was no software to correct pitches or do any form of editing. What you sang was exactly what came out. Today, you can cut and paste. You sing one chorus and repeat it as many times as you want. They are blessed with more gadgets, software, and technology. Because of that, the music is growing, and singing is becoming finer and finer,” he said.
Joe Beecham also highlighted the growth of gospel music within the Ghana Music Awards, noting that the genre previously received minimal recognition compared to today.
“When I started releasing songs, there were only one or two categories for gospel music at the Ghana Music Awards. In fact, the award I won was Discovery of the Year, not even a gospel category. Now, it has expanded significantly. Gospel music has become big, and this is our own.
“If we support gospel music, it will become even bigger and better. It will continue to grow and accommodate more artistes. I saw many categories this time, even very broad ones,” he added.
