The newly launched homegrown ride hailing app, GoRide is set to build a more resilient and self-sufficient Ghana in an ever-evolving world of transportation.

As digital transformation continues to shape Ghana’s future, GoRide stands as an example of what can be achieved when local innovation meets local needs.

Launched by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the app, developed through a government-backed public-private partnership offers convenience and accessibility crucial for both drivers and passengers.

Ghana’s transport sector has seen significant shifts in recent years with the introduction of international ride-hailing apps like Uber and Bolt. While these platforms provided much-needed ease for commuters, they also introduced challenges that left local taxi drivers grappling to retain their footing in an increasingly competitive market.

Now, a new homegrown app, GoRide, is providing a lifeline to Ghanaian drivers and promising a boost to the local economy. GoRide, developed by the Transport for Ghana Consortium Limited (TFG), brings a Ghanaian-led approach to ride-hailing. This app supports local taxi drivers by offering a flexible, lower-cost alternative to foreign platforms and empowering them to maintain control over their earnings.

In contrast to high commission rates imposed by foreign apps, GoRide’s reduced 10percent commission means drivers can earn more and manage their businesses sustainably.

A welfare component has been built into the initiative, which includes an insurance and pension scheme aimed at providing long-term financial stability for drivers. For the drivers of Ghana’s vibrant and longstanding taxi sector, GoRide represents a valuable opportunity to stay competitive and financially secure in a digital era.

    Supporting Ghanaian drivers’ livelihoods

The difference GoRide makes to local taxi drivers is not merely technological; it’s economic and personal. With GoRide, drivers face significantly lower commission rates compared to foreign counterparts.

Where other apps charge as high as 30percent, GoRide takes only 10percent for rides booked through the app, and 1percent of this goes towards the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) for drivers’ welfare.

This addition helps drivers build a more secure financial future—a benefit that’s virtually absent in international ride-hailing models. Moreover, GoRide offers a unique advantage by allowing drivers to keep 100percent of their fare when they acquire passengers independently without using the app.

This flexibility gives them the autonomy to secure additional income without sacrificing a portion of their earnings to commission fees. For taxi drivers who have been in the industry for decades, GoRide enables them to transition smoothly into the digital age while retaining control over their finances.

For passengers, GoRide keeps things simple yet efficient. With just a few taps, passengers can request a ride and get matched with a nearby driver. In line with Ghana’s rich tradition of haggling, GoRide has a built-in feature that allows passengers and drivers to negotiate fares within a range. This unique approach combines digital convenience with the familiar negotiation experience that many Ghanaians value, preserving a cultural touchstone in the transport industry.

GoRide’s mobile money integration adds an additional layer of convenience. As mobile money becomes increasingly widespread, passengers can pay for their rides directly through the app, while drivers can withdraw their earnings easily. This system promotes cashless transactions, an essential feature in Ghana’s growing digital economy, and eliminates withdrawal charges, helping both parties save on unnecessary expenses.

A boost to Ghana’s digital economy

The economic benefits of GoRide extend beyond individual drivers and passengers. As a locally-developed app, GoRide is a testament to Ghana’s growing potential in technology and innovation.

The Transport for Ghana Consortium Limited (TFG), the team behind GoRide, collaborated with three indigenous tech companies to bring the platform to life. This collaboration showcases the capability of local expertise and technology to address local challenges, proving that Ghana can produce world-class digital solutions tailored to the needs of its citizens. This development marks a positive step towards building Ghana’s digital economy.

By using a platform that reinvests in local businesses and communities, Ghanaians are supporting homegrown initiatives that strengthen the economy from within.

Additionally, the introduction of GoRide follows the government’s recent launch of the Tapn’Go platform for public transport payments, showing a clear trend toward leveraging local tech solutions to modernize the country’s transport infrastructure.

    A path to nationwide expansion

Currently available in select parts of urban Accra, GoRide has plans for a gradual expansion across the country. This phased approach will allow the platform to grow sustainably, reaching a broader range of passengers and drivers over time.

By covering more areas and adapting to regional needs, GoRide aims to eventually provide seamless service throughout Ghana, creating opportunities for drivers in different regions to benefit from the platform’s advantages.

    GoRide: A proudly Ghanaian solution

GoRide’s launch marks a pivotal moment for Ghana’s transport sector. Unlike foreign alternatives, which prioritize profit and can often overlook local needs, GoRide embodies a new direction—one that prioritizes fairness, simplicity, and sustainability. For drivers, GoRide is more than just an app; it’s a tool that respects their livelihoods and values their contributions to Ghana’s transportation landscape.

For passengers, it offers a reliable, affordable, and culturally familiar way to get around, all while contributing to the local economy.

By choosing GoRide, passengers and drivers alike are participating in a broader movement to support Ghana’s economy and keep the local spirit of transportation alive. Whether it’s the reliable rides for passengers or the sustainable income for drivers, GoRide is helping to build a more resilient and self-sufficient Ghana.
