Presidential staffer for the Black Star Experience initiative, Rex Omar, has revealed plans to support the creation of one or two world-class record labels in Ghana that can promote Ghanaian artistes on the global stage.
Speaking in an interview on Joy FM, Rex Omar explained that one of the main reasons Ghanaian musicians struggle to break into the international market is the lack of well-resourced record labels in the country.
“We’ve done our research and we have realised that the reason why Ghanaian artistes get to a certain level and they are stuck is because we don’t have any well-resourced record label in this country, be it personnel or funding,” he said.
He pointed out the huge difference that funding makes when it comes to promoting music internationally.
“Because you cannot release the single in Ghana no matter how good the music is, and you put say 200,000 cedis in the marketing and another artiste releases a song and puts 200,000 dollars in the marketing, your music might be the best but his music will blow,” he added.
Rex Omar emphasised that the goal is to set up one or two record labels that have the right structures, personnel, and financial backing to take Ghanaian music to the world.
“So, then it means that we need to set up one or two well-resourced record labels that have what it takes to market Ghanaian artistes to that globally,” he said.
He clarified that this initiative will not be funded by the government but rather through partnerships with private investors and businesses.
“We will facilitate to bring private investment to do that. Because if you say government, everything that belongs to government belongs to everybody,” he explained.
When asked if existing record labels that are doing well but need extra support will benefit, Rex Omar said such labels will be assessed based on their track record and the impact they’ve made.
“We will assess and see who has been in the system, their track record, how many artistes they have been able to project and based on that it will be chosen,” he said.
