Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President George Afriyie has rejected claims that GFA President Kurt Okraku is to blame for the turmoil surrounding Hohoe United, describing the situation as a collective failure involving both club owners and the football governing body.

His comments follow Hohoe United’s decision on April 1, 2026, to withdraw from the ongoing Ghana Premier League season, citing systemic challenges and what they termed unfair treatment.

Speaking on Asempa FM, Afriyie insisted criticism directed at Okraku was misplaced, arguing that deeper structural issues and inconsistencies in disciplinary enforcement are at the heart of the problem.

He noted that repeated offences by clubs are not being met with progressively tougher sanctions, undermining discipline across the league. According to him, penalties often remain unchanged despite multiple violations, contrary to the GFA’s own regulations.

Afriyie also pointed to logistical challenges faced by Hohoe United, including limited access to their designated home venue. With only one of their remaining fixtures scheduled at home, the club was forced to play most matches away, a situation officials say severely affected their survival chances.

Hohoe United were in the relegation zone with 30 points from 27 matches before their withdrawal.
