Ghanaian athlete, Godwin Sackey has appealed to the government to prioritise and invest in armwrestling to elevate the standard of the sport in the country.

He emphasised the need for more expert trainers to guide athletes through structured routines that will enhance their performance and help them excel in tournaments.

The Immigration officer also stressed the importance of reviving armwrestling in educational institutions and across various regions to unearth new talents capable of representing the nation.

Speaking on Sports Check, aired on GhanaWeb TV, Sackey made an earnest appeal to the government and other stakeholders to support the growth of armwrestling in Ghana.

“Our colleagues, players from other countries, come to us. We are not the first to start armwrestling, but they respect us because of the leader we have. And when the government steps in, we’ll be able to excel even more. We need a training center that will help athletes. We can grow. If the government supports us, we’ll be able to nurture the younger generation. I won’t be like this forever. Young ones have to come and take over. Let’s assume I’m now old and can’t compete anymore,” he said.

He further added that with the right investment, Ghana could win more laurels in the sport.

“Who is going to take over from me? We need support so we can develop new athletes for armwrestling. That will help us. We should go to the regions and organise competitions, especially in schools. If the government can do all this for us, armwrestling will thrive beyond what we see today, Ghana will go far,” Sackey told GhanaWeb Sports.
