The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) on Tuesday held a day’s clinic on the Olympic Values Education Programme (OVEP) for selected school children at the University of Ghana Stadium, Legon.
The event forms part of efforts to promote the Olympic values and create awareness for Ghana’s participation in the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar.
Held on the theme “Africa’s First, Ghana’s Moment!”, the programme formed part of the GOC’s wider agenda of building momentum for Team Ghana’s participation in the games, scheduled for October 31 to November 13 in the Senegalese capital.
It was attended by over 400 school children from four schools in the Ayawaso West Municipality, namely the University Staff Village Basic School and JHS, as well as La Bawaleshie Presbyterian School 1 and 2.
Led by the Dakar Games torch and some members of Team Ghana for the Games, the students, their teachers and dignitaries took part in a 12-kilometre walk on the athletic oval. During the walk, participants took part in the symbolic passing of the Olympic torch while celebrating the three values of the Olympic Movement: respect, excellence and friendship.
Addressing the students, the special guest of honour, Mr Kofi Adams, whose speech was read on his behalf by the Chief Director at the Ministry of Sports, Ms Fati Lily Soale, noted that the OVEP was an investment in the future of Ghana sports.
He called on parents and guardians to create an environment where every child would have an opportunity to discover their talent, develop their potential and pursue their dreams.
Mr Adams noted that his outfit, together with the GOC, would ensure that Team Ghana prepares well, and urged the athletes to repay the investment in them by returning with medals.
On his part, the Chef de Mission for Team Ghana at the Games, Mr Evans Yeboah, encouraged the students to embrace sports and live a healthy lifestyle.
Ghana would participate in eight events at the Games including athletics, table tennis, boxing, taekwondo, judo, beach volleyball, badminton and swimming.
