THE Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) has expressed concern and unreserved condemnation of the acts of violence and hooliganism which has come to be associated with school sports; the latest involving students of Obrachire Senior High School.

Such behaviour, the GOC emphasised in a statement, was a direct violation of the fundamental principles of Olympism—friendship, solidarity, and fair play—as sports was intended to be a vehicle for discipline and national unity, not a catalyst for chaos.

“This incident is particularly detrimental, occurring at a time when the government through the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, has formally established the School Sports Secretariat to professionalise and enhance grassroots sports to ensure a seamless transition from school competitions to the national stage,” the statement explained.

“The GOC is further concerned about the broader sponsorship challenges that incidents of this nature create for school sports. Acts of indiscipline and violence erode corporate confidence and threaten ongoing efforts to secure and sustain private sector partnerships essential for the growth of inter-school competitions nationwide.”

The statement continue[d] that, “When events are marred by violence, the brand’s integrity and safety expectations of sponsors are compromised, potentially leading to hesitation, delays, or withdrawal of critical funding that supports grassroots development.”

It added that, “At a time when school sports require expanded financial backing to strengthen organisation, logistics, and security frameworks, such incidents pose a serious setback to collective progress.”

As the GOC commends the Ghana Police Service and other state officials for the swift actions, it called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the School Sports Secretariat to help curb future occurrences.

“We must ensure that the unruly few do not derail a national agenda designed to nurture talent, instil discipline, and safeguard the future of our student-athletes,” it underlined.

That notwithstanding, the GOC remains committed to working collaboratively with all stakeholders to reinforce security measures, strengthen educational sensitisation, and restore confidence among current and prospective partners supporting Ghana’s school sports ecosystem.
