Ghanaian Hockey club, Fortyfied Citizens International, on Saturday, July 19, 2025, celebrated its 40th anniversary.

Founded in 1985 by three employees of the Ghana Commercial Bank, Fortyfied Citizens International has been a pillar in the development of hockey in Ghana and has produced several national heroes in the last four decades.

Speaking at the club’s 40th anniversary held at the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium, current President Kwame Owusu acknowledged the contribution of the late founding members while showering praises on the only living founding member, Adu Mante.

“This club was founded in 1985 for veterans by three individuals who were then working for the Ghana Commercial Bank. Sadly, as we speak today, Adu Mante is the only one left among them, and we are forever grateful to him.”

“We salute our founding members because their legacy continues to inspire us, the hard work and dedication of our playing and non-playing members have also made our club shine like shooting stars, and we are grateful to our supporters and admirers too,” Kwame Owusu said in his opening remarks.

He also shed light on how Fortyfied Citizens International dominated the hockey league in Ghana for decades, including their successive victories in 1987 and 1988, just two years after the club was funded.

“We won the league in 1987 and 1988 shortly after we were funded. We have also won the Afehye Competition several times, with the last victory coming in 2023.”
