George Afriyie, the former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association, has expressed concern regarding Ghana’s failure to qualify for both the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco and the upcoming 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

This disappointing outcome follows Ghana’s loss to Nigeria in the final qualifying round for CHAN.

Ghana’s struggles this year were compounded by Coach Otto Addo’s inability to secure a spot in the 2025 AFCON, marking the first occasion in over two decades that the Black Stars will miss out on the tournament.

During the qualifiers, the team finished at the bottom of Group E without a single victory and ended last in Group F with just three points from five matches.

In an interview with Citi Sports, Afriyie lamented Ghana’s absence from the tournament, describing it as worrying.

“If you have 24 countries participating in Africa’s biggest Mundial and Ghana is not counted among them, then it’s worrying.

“If we have teams participating in CHAN and Ghana is not being counted among the best then it’s worrying if we have Africa under 17 championship coming and Ghana is not counted among them then it’s worrying.”

The Black Stars are scheduled to reconvene in March for crucial World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar, while Coach Otto Addo’s future remains uncertain.
