Former Black Stars defender, Sam Johnson has bemoaned Ghana’s performance in the 2025 Kirin Challenge Cup against Japan and South Korea.

According to Sam Johnson, the games were friendly matches but the defeat will affect Ghana’s ranking on the international stage.

Speaking to Citi Sports, the former Accra Hearts of Oak defender described the results as troubling, particularly with the World Cup on the horizon.

“As a player or as a country, you can’t ignore results like this. It’s concerning ahead of such a big tournament.”

“The more you lose, the more you go down; that is the main problem,” Sam Johnson said.

He also urged the public to tone down on the criticisms because the Black Stars went into the games without some key players.

“Some of the players are not the ones we’ll take to the World Cup, so that alone should shift perceptions. Some are playing their first matches, and others are new to the setup. We have to allow them time to adapt,” he explained.

Ghana lost 2-0 to Japan on Friday, November 14, before the 1-0 defeat to South Korea on Tuesday, November 18, 2025.
