Ghana’s boxing fraternity will converge on Keta this Easter as legendary former world champion Azumah Nelson is honoured with a landmark accolade in his name.

The Volta Region will stage the maiden “Prof Azumah Nelson Champion Emeritus” world title on April 4, 2026, when the World Alliance Boxing Association hosts a special tournament in tribute to the iconic three-time world champion. The event will take place at the Aborigines Beach Resort Hotel, with Nelson expected to attend as guest of honour.

Headlining the card is an all-Ghanaian clash between Michael “One Bullet” Ansah and Michael Pappoe for the inaugural Supreme Prof Azumah Nelson Champion Emeritus World Super Featherweight Championship. Organisers say the bout will serve as the centrepiece of an evening celebrating Nelson’s enduring legacy in African boxing.

WABA President Onesmo Alfred McBride Ngowi described the initiative as a rare honour for a living boxer, noting that the tournament sets a benchmark for recognition in the sport.

The bill will also feature two additional WABA title fights, including Saviour Gad against Eliasu Sulley and Abubakar Mubarak versus Benin’s Justin Hounkpevi. Several undercard bouts are expected to complete the Easter showcase.
