In accordance with Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution, President John Dramani Mahama has removed Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office. This decisive action was taken immediately after the President received and accepted the findings of the Article 146 Committee of Inquiry, which investigated a petition and substantiated allegations of stated misbehavior against the Chief Justice.

The government’s announcement on September 1st emphasized that the process was one of strict constitutional compliance. This unprecedented event has triggered considerable discussion within Ghana’s legal and political spheres and among the general public, particularly on social media. It is anticipated to profoundly influence conversations on judicial integrity and the separation of powers. The Presidency is expected to release a comprehensive statement detailing the implications for the judiciary in the near future.
