Ghanaians have voiced outrage after a preacher, Prophet Elija Joshua, paid GHC40,000 to replace a destroyed statue of former President Nana Akufo-Addo in Sekondi-Takoradi. Many others believe the funds could have been used to help struggling church members instead.

The statue, which was formerly located at the Effiankwanta Hospital roundabout, was demolished in January by unknown perpetrators. Prophet Elija Joshua, who ran as an independent parliamentary candidate in the previous election, promised to replace it. He recently stated that he had already engaged a sculptor to reconstruct it, and the project would be completed by May.

Many Ghanaians, however, have reacted negatively to his decision. They contend that people in his congregation are suffering to afford food, school fees, and medical care, but he chose to spend so much money on a statue. Some argue that the money could have been better spent, such as assisting the needy or sponsoring community projects.

Prophet Elijah Joshua defended his decision, claiming that Akufo-Addo made significant contributions to the Western Region, such as expanding Effiankwanta Hospital, constructing Takoradi Market Circle, and developing roads. He insists that the past president should be recognized.

He further warned that if officials refuse to allow him to install the monument in its original location, he will load it into the bucket of his pickup truck and drive around with it.

Despite his answer, many Ghanaians remain dissatisfied, wondering why a pastor would prefer a monument over the well-being of those in need.
