Ghanaian referee, Charles Benle Bulu was escorted off the pitch by security personnel after chaotic scenes erupted at the end of a CAF Champions League preliminary round fixture between MC Alger and Colombe Sportive du Dja et Lobo on Sunday, October 26, 2025.

Charles Bulu was attacked by furious Colombe players and officials who felt he made several questionable decisions during the tense second leg encounter in Algiers.

The match ended 0–0, but the result was enough for MC Alger to progress to the group stage on the away goal rule, having drawn 1–1 in the first leg in Cameroon.

In the videos circulating online, Bulu was seen being surrounded by angry Colombe players before CAF stewards and security officers quickly intervened, shielding the Ghanaian referee as they escorted him off the field amid loud jeers from the visiting bench.

This incident adds to a growing list of unfortunate moments in Bulu’s officiating career. The Ghanaian referee made headlines in March 2021 when he collapsed during the AFCON qualifier between Ivory Coast and Ethiopia in Abidjan, forcing the game to end prematurely.

He was also physically assaulted during the 2022/23 Ghana Premier League season following Legon Cities’ 1–0 defeat to Medeama SC at the El-Wak Sports Stadium.

In that game, he sent off midfielder Michel Otou in the 78th minute, a decision that sparked heated protests.

CAF is yet to issue an official statement on the latest incident, but it’s expected that both the match report and video evidence will be reviewed to determine possible sanctions against Colombe.
