Paris Saint Germain on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, in Udine, Italy were crowned as Champions of the UEFA Super Cup, becoming the first club from France to win the trophy.

The French side despite being the favorite in the Super Cup final had to work their way up to win the game 4-2 on penalties after going down 2-0 before the 83rd minute mark.

With PSG joining the league of clubs who have won the UEFA Super Cup, we look at Ghanaian players who came close to lift the trophy but failed to do so.

Kudus Mohammed: Tottenham (2025)

Kudus Mohammed has become the latest Ghanaian player to join the list of those who have played and lost in the UEFA Super Cup.

The winger made his competitive debut for Tottenham Hotspur in the 2025 UEFA Super Cup against Paris Saint-Germain, showcasing his exceptional skills and speed. Despite his impressive performance, Tottenham lost the match 2-2 in regulation time and 4-3 in a penalty shootout.

Christian Gyan: Feyenoord (2002)

Christian Gyan, another prominent Ghanaian footballer, had the opportunity to represent Feyenoord in the 2002 UEFA Super Cup.

The Dutch side had won the 2001/02 UEFA Cup after defeating Borussia Dortmund 3-2 in the final at the Feyenoord Stadion, with Gyan playing the full 90 minutes for Bert van Marwijk’s team.

However, they were defeated 3-1 in the Super Cup by Real Madrid at Stade Louis II in Monaco on August 30, 2002, as Christian Gyan was substituted in the 72nd minute.

Meanwhile, Christian Gyan died in the Netherlands at age of 43 after battling with cancer for 4 years in 2021.

Ibrahim Tanko: Borussia Dortmund (1997)

Ibrahim Tanko was indeed one of Ghana’s brightest young stars in the 1990s. He featured in the 1997 UEFA Super Cup but they lost to Barcelona.

At the time, the competition was played on a home and away basis, Dortmund drew 1-1 at home but lost 2-0 at the Camp Nou.

Tankoh was the first Ghanaian to compete in the UEFA Super Cup.
