Have you ever imagined the possibility of transforming recycled pure water sachet rubbers into innovative items, let alone a school desk?

That’s exactly what Makafui Awuku has done. His groundbreaking innovation of constructing school desks from recycled sachet rubbers has taken the internet and social media by storm, earning widespread admiration and praise.

According to Awuku, his journey to transform pure water sachet waste into wood-like boards began five years ago.

He said that his goal was to create durable materials that could serve as a more sustainable alternative to traditional wooden items for use across various sectors.

“5 years ago, I started a journey to innovate wood-like boards from pure water sachet waste with the aim of making durable raw material that can last for decades and be used in various sectors,” he wrote on his Facebook page on May 23, 2025.

Recounting his journey, Awuku shared that it took years of experimentation and financial investment to reach this point.

He admitted that there were moments when he contemplated abandoning the project due to the numerous challenges he encountered. However, he remained resilient and determined, pushing through the setbacks to bring his vision to life.

“It was years of experiments and spending of money that I may not recover. Along the journey man can get cold feet thinking it would all be a waste of my time and resources. But that is the key foundation of entrepreneurship. Having a plan and sticking to it even though you do not see the destination in sight. Faith,” he continued.

Despite the challenges, Awuku, also an entrepreneur revealed that he has successfully completed his first batch of 200 recycled desks for schools.

The initiative he said, is aimed at addressing the issue of access to education in underprivileged communities, particularly for students who are forced to learn on bare floors across the country.

Aside the desks, Awuku also makes clocks from recycled plastics.
