Ghana’s rising status in regional volleyball was highlighted by strong performances from Ghana Army Volleyball Club and Kalibi Volleyball Club at the 2026 CAVB Zone III Volleyball Club Championship held at the Borteyman Sports Complex in Accra.

The championship, staged from March 1 to 10, brought together 32 clubs from seven West African countries, marking one of the largest gatherings in regional club volleyball and highlighting the sport’s steady growth in Ghana.

Host clubs dominated the competition, with Ghana Army Volleyball Club claiming the men’s title after defeating Nigeria Customs Volleyball Club in straight sets (25–21, 25–21, 25–23). In the women’s category, Kalibi Volleyball Club also produced a commanding display to beat Vipers Volleyball Club of Nigeria 3–0 (25–15, 25–16, 25–13) to lift the trophy.

The tournament attracted several high-profile dignitaries, including Bouchra Hajij, President of the Confederation of African Volleyball, whose presence underlined the significance of the event for the sport’s development across the continent.

Other notable attendees included Kofi Iddie Adams, Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Richard Akpokavie, President of the Ghana Olympic Committee, and Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, Director-General of the National Sports Authority.

Speaking at the event, Adams praised the progress of volleyball in Ghana and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting sports development through the national Sports Fund.

Despite the success, stakeholders say increased corporate sponsorship and stronger grassroots investment will be essential to sustain the sport’s growth.

With improving infrastructure and a growing pool of talented players, Ghana continues to position itself as an emerging force in West African volleyball.
