Ghanaian weightlifter, Marie Korkor Agbah-Hughes has earned global recognition after being named a recipient of the Airbnb Athlete Travel Grant, a prestigious initiative run in partnership with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).

The award, valued at $2,000, is designed to ease the financial strain of travel for athletes as they chase their sporting dreams, from qualification events to training camps and international competitions.

Marie now joins a select group of athletes worldwide benefiting from Airbnb’s collaboration with the IOC and IPC, a program created to remove barriers and give competitors the freedom to focus on performance rather than logistics.

Sharing her excitement, the rising star described the grant as perfectly timed: “This grant comes at a crucial moment in my career as I continue to push towards excellence in weightlifting. It will ease the burden of travel expenses and allow me to focus fully on training, competition, and proudly representing Ghana.”

How a love for the Olympics kickstarted Marie Agbah-Hughes’ weightlifting dream

The Airbnb Athlete Travel Grant Program reflects the IOC and IPC’s commitment to supporting Olympians, Paralympians, and aspiring hopefuls with flexible assistance that directly impacts their preparation and growth.

For Marie, the honour not only marks a significant personal milestone but also highlights Ghana’s emergence on the global weightlifting stage, signaling brighter prospects for the nation in the years ahead.
