Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) will resume spillage of excess water from the Weija Dam from Wednesday, September 9, 2026, following heavy rains upstream.
According to GWL, the water level at the dam has risen to 45.2 feet as a result of continued rainfall in the catchment area of the Densu River and its tributaries, and is fast approaching the 46-foot threshold.
The precautionary spillage, the company says, is necessary to safeguard the integrity of the dam.
GWL is urging all residents living downstream of the dam to evacuate before any eventuality. It has also advised residents to remain alert, follow official evacuation directives, and avoid activities that could expose them to danger.
The company has called on NADMO, the District Assembly, traditional authorities, assembly members, resident associations and other relevant stakeholders to put in place the necessary precautionary measures and prepare for evacuation.
Communities likely to be affected include Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach, Ada Kopey and surrounding communities.
GWL says it is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to provide updates, adding that the safety of residents remains its priority.
