Ghana’s Black Queens begin their 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign on Monday, July 7, 2025, with a tough opener against reigning champions South Africa at the Honneur Stadium in Oudja.

This clash marks Ghana’s long-awaited return to the continental showpiece after missing the last edition.

The Black Queens last featured in 2018 as hosts but bowed out at the group stage.

Now, under head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren, the team is determined to make a fresh statement in Morocco.

The two sides last met in the WAFCON back in 2016,when Ghana edged South Africa 1-0 to secure third place.

However, recent meetings paint a different picture: South Africa has won four of the last five encounters between the two nations, with Ghana’s only victory coming in that 2016 bronze match.

The form guide suggests Banyana Banyana holding the upper hand.

South Africa have won all seven of their matches so far this year and sit 54th in the FIFA world rankings and 2nd in Africa.

Ghana, ranked 66th globally and 6th on the continent, have managed just three wins from eight official matches in 2025, beating Senegal (1-0), Malawi (3-1) and Benin (4-2).

A tough test awaits the Black Queens, but with a new-look squad and renewed ambition, they’ll be hoping to spring a surprise and kickstart their campaign with an upset against the defending champions.

The game kicks off at 4 pm local time.
