Ghana’s Sports and Recreation Minister, Kofi Adams, has announced plans to establish a committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of Nigerian boxer, Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju. The 28-year-old passed away at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital on Saturday, sparking concerns from the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBC).

The NBBC, led by its President, Dr. Rafiu Oladipo, has formally requested an autopsy report from the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) to clarify the cause of death. Conflicting reports have emerged, prompting the Ghanaian government to ensure transparency in the probe.

Government’s Commitment to a Fair Investigation

Minister Kofi Adams reassured both nations that the committee will conduct a thorough inquiry, urging full cooperation from both the GBA and the NBBC.

“We have only begun the process. We need to institute a committee of a sort to go into what happened. I have assured that nothing will be covered, we’ll ask all the questions that must be asked,” he stated.

He also emphasized the importance of maintaining strong sporting relations between Ghana and Nigeria, dismissing concerns that the incident could lead to hostile reactions when Ghanaian boxers compete in Nigeria.

    Next Steps

The committee will examine medical records, fight conditions, and emergency response protocols.

The Ghana Boxing Authority is expected to submit a report to help clarify the cause of death.

Both Ghanaian and Nigerian officials will work together to ensure a transparent resolution.

As the investigation unfolds, the sports community across West Africa awaits answers regarding the tragedy that has shaken the boxing world.
